Togetherness: Erika's Story - Mental Health Week

Supporting each other can greatly improve our mental health. Erika Neck, 44, from Abercynon, attends the Merthyr Girls Can programme and can vouch for this.

In her own words, she explains how team work has helped her ...

" Before I started Merthyr Girls Can, I had very little confidence and never went out much. Having been bullied as a teenager I have always struggled with my self-esteem. I was very anxious about starting the programme as I didn’t think I could do it for 20 weeks. How  ever, I couldn’t be more wrong!

I have really improved my confidence. I now think I can achieve most things. Being able to run a half marathon at the end of the programme made me really believe in myself. When I look at fitness challenges, I want to give them a go even if I’m not as quick or fit as others - at least I’m giving it a try!

I have loved meeting other women who are in the same boat as me. Talking with them has made me realise we all have the same feelings of anxiety or lack of confidence.

When I go to the gym it feels safe and welcoming; friendly and supportive. I do not feel judged about how I look but I’m celebrated by the achievements I make, however small.

I have now realised I love exercising and challenge myself to complete different targets that I have always wanted to achieve but I have never felt able to do.

I have in the pipeline and 10k run, another 2 half marathons and I’m climbing Snowdon. It is important for me to have a goal to work towards to keep me on the programme.

I still struggle sometimes but I just look back at what I have achieved and that gives me the confidence to keep going. "
