Gaining Insight By Listening To Pupil Voice, Estyn

Estyn, the inspectorate of education and pembinaan in Wales, highlights why pupils should be asked to speak out about sport

With learners at the heart of Estyn’s work, their wellbeing is a priority. When inspectors visit a school, they check how happy and safe pupils feel and whether they are enjoying learning and keeping healthy.

Whatever age you are, the link between achieving wellbeing and an active lifestyle is clear – the more exercise you do the better it can make you feel. Being active and exercising regularly not only keeps us physically fit but can help lift our mood by releasing chemicals that make us feel good.

Asking pupils how they feel is a key part of all inspections. Estyn seeks pupils’ views through a questionnaire and inspectors also interview a selection of pupils to find out how well their school contributes to their wellbeing.

The Chief Inspector’s Annual Report 2013-2014 found that wellbeing is good or better in the majority of primary schools. Children have a good understanding of what they need to do to be healthy and the benefits of regular exercise. In secondary schools, many pupils understand the importance of healthy living and participate in a wide range of physical and sporting activities. We are on the right track but there is more we can do.

Research by Public Health Wales suggests that just over a third of all children under 16 are overweight or obese. It’s important that children are taught how to be healthy and are given opportunities to keep fit in school. Giving learners the chance to talk about what sport really means to them through both inspection and the School Sport Survey is vital.

The opinions gathered during the School Sport Survey provide a valuable insight into children’s relationship with sport that no other survey could hope to achieve.

Sport is all about taking part. Let’s give pupils the chance to take part in shaping their own future, listen to what they are saying and take action on what we learn.
