School Sport Survey: Providing The Best Opportunities For Our Young People

Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Ken Skates:

The wide-ranging health and well-being benefits of regular sports and physical activity are well-known. This is why we want to see young people not only taking part in regular exercise, but developing a love of sport that gets them hooked for life.

For many young people, school is the main place in which they are introduced to and regularly take part in sport. It’s important that this experience is a positive one so that young people are inspired to continue to participate outside of school and in the future.

The latest School Sport Survey showed us that the number of young people doing regular exercise is increasing, with 91 per cent reporting that they enjoy school sport. This is welcome news, but there is still much to be done, with boys still more likely than girls to take part in regular physical activity.

The School Sport Survey is important in developing our understanding of an ever-changing situation.  We need as many schools to take part as possible to get an accurate picture of the attitude of young people across Wales to sport and the level of participation.

I hope that head teachers and their staff will support our aim and encourage pupils to fill in the survey. We particularly need to hear from those groups in which we know that participation levels are lower, such as girls, those from black and ethnic minority communities and disabled children.

There should be no barriers to sport and its many benefits. I’d like to see young people of all abilities, ages and backgrounds regularly participating. As someone with a love of sport I know the joy this can bring, from a solitary run to a team sport, there is something for everyone and it is saddening to think of any young people missing out.

This is why It is so important we gather information from our School Sport Survey so we can see what is working and where improvements need to be made. It helps us to plan any future sport opportunities across Wales and could influence future investment.  It will also help us to understand how to encourage tomorrow’s generation to participate more in physical activity.

I hope that schools across Wales will work with us so we can strive for the best opportunities for all our young people to enjoy sport now and in the future.
