The Importance Of Pupil Feedback – Estyn

The 2018 School Sport Survey is now live and we’re hoping that every school in Wales will take part.

We caught up with Estyn to get their views on why the survey is so important and how it could benefit schools and their pupils….

From the proud history of our national rugby team and our Euro 2016 success in football, to athletics stars such as Colin Jackson and Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, sport has always been a celebrated feature of Welsh culture.

Participating in sport and making exercise a lifestyle choice at an early age contributes greatly to an individual’s well-being.  Schools play an important role in creating opportunities to improve pupils’ physical health through sport and for pupils to learn new skills, make friends and build their self-confidence.  These experiences can also improve pupils’ emotional well-being and mental health significantly.

Evaluating learners’ well-being is a central feature of Estyn’s inspections.  The Chief Inspector’s Annual Report 2016-2017 found that most pupils understand the importance of healthy eating and regular exercise and that well-being is good or better in seven-in-ten schools.  While the report says that our schools are heading in the right direction, it points out that there is always more to do.

The most effective schools have embraced the value of pupil voice in their approach to well-being.  Encouraging pupils of all ages to contribute to decision-making and policy development through groups, forums and other feedback activities creates a sense of ownership and engagement in their educational experiences.  This approach can increase pupil participation across all aspects of education, including for physical activity and developing well-being. Severn Primary School in Cardiff listened to pupils’ feedback and identified low number of Muslim girls participating in sports.  As a result, the school set up partnerships with local sports organisations to create a popular multi-sports club for its female pupils.

Estyn uses data gathered through the School Sport Survey to help us when talking to pupils, and when reviewing evidence during school inspections.  The Sport Survey provides valuable information about pupils’ attitudes to sport, levels of physical activity, and the range of activities and opportunities available to them in their school.  The survey has benefits as part of a reflective school culture and the contribution it can make to a school’s self-evaluation process.

Estyn encourages all schools to participate in the Sport Wales survey.  Opportunities to listen to pupils and gain direct feedback on their experiences and attitudes is a key part of teaching and learning. Read more about this in our latest Annual Report and discover case studies of effective practice.
