Volunteer Q&A For #Mhaw18

Q&A time with Young Ambassador Jordan Harford on volunteering and its benefits for good mental health

PROFILE
Name: Jordan Harford
Age: 19
Location: Abertillery

Volunteering: Young Ambassador. Sports volunteer including football coaching under 10’s, various primary schools festivals with Aneurin Leisure, youth and family engagement events.

How does volunteering boost your wellbeing?

Volunteering gives me a feel-good factor of “giving back.” It makes me feel good that I’m making a difference to other people’s lives. I’ve kept doing it as I like to give back to the community of Blaenau Gwent and share the experiences I’ve been fortunate enough to have had.

What are the challenges of volunteering and how do you deal with them?

My main challenge is motivation, especially after a bad day at work. I try and remember why I do it and the positive impact that I’m having on these people. I think about the difference I could potentially be making for them or their families. Some sessions can be stressful, if participants are challenging, but I mostly come out of sessions feeling happy that I’ve been able to give back and happy that they enjoyed themselves.

How has sport and volunteering helped your personal growth?

Volunteering and physical activity have personally helped me in a big way to overcome personal mental health issues. Its helped me develop and become more mature in my job and I’ve been able to see things differently and see things from a different perspective.
