Young weightlifting star Catrin Jones is already making a name for herself on the international stage.
Already a gold medal winner at the Commonwealth Youth Games, the 16 year-old is currently ripping up Welsh and British records.
My last major competition of 2015 was the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa, which I am proud to say I achieved a Gold Medal for Wales. After the competition, I took a week off pembinaan whilst my coach created a strength pembinaan programme to increase my overall strength.
This strength programme continued into 2016 and, then eased into more of a competition phase to prepare me for my first competition on February 27th 2016.
This was my first competition of 2016 where I competed at the British Age Group in Castleford, Yorkshire and competed in the 48kg body weight class.
I was quite pleased with the results I achieved, by achieving six out of six successful lifts. Within these lifts I was able to break the current Welsh records (which I previously held), as well as the British under 17's records, (which I also held prior to the competition) with a 63kg Snatch and 80kg Clean & Jerk, giving me a 143kg total. I was able to break these records twice on each discipline which resulted in 6 records broken.
A week later I was invited to Loughborough University to attend the British National Youth Development Squad, which will meet on a number of occasions throughout the year. This is great opportunity for the athletes to meet and get to know each other as well as train together and support each other for our future goals. The squad goes though very aspects of training, with nutrition advice, physio if required and testing procedures to monitor athlete progress.
March 12th saw the Welsh Senior Weightlifting championships held at Bangor University’s Canolfan Brailsford Sport Centre.
I entered the 48kg body weight class, which resulted in me obtaining a 65kg snatch and 81kg Clean & Jerk, resulting in a total of 146kg.
The total broke Welsh records up to 23 year-old and also broken 4 British age group records.
My goals for 2016 are to compete for Great Britain at the European ‘Youths’ in Poland and World ‘Youths’ in Malaysia.
To qualify for these events I have to compete at the British ‘Youths’ in Castleford in May, where athletes are required to meet the qualifying standards to hopefully be selected to compete in the European and World youths. In addition to this in Malaysia a week after the World ‘Youths’ is the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, when I will hopefully get the opportunity to represent Wales.
I would like to thank my personal coach, national coach and Welsh Weightlifting for their ongoing support, as well as support from SSE generation, which have helped me along the way to hopefully let me achieve the future goal of competing for Wales at the next Commonwealth Games.
