The Future Of Welsh Performance Coaching, By Eleanor Walker

=

Eleanor Walker is the Coaching and Talent Development Senior Officer for Wales and is employed by as part of a partnership project with UK Sport, called ‘Project Connect’.

Project Connect has been put in place because appropriate focus and effort on performance coaching is critical to delivering elite sporting success.

Here she outlines the direction for performance coaching and how it can contribute to athlete success on the elite stage.

We hear about the team behind the team but coaching is a huge ingredient of any medal win.

When we know it is such a key aspect for our athletes then, of course, we’re not going to simply sit back and leave our performance coaching landscape to chance.

At we have the ambition to attract, develop and retain the highest calibre of High Performance Coaches and Performance Directors. We want this to happen across all sports, but in particular we work closely with the sports identified in our Elite Sports Strategy. Resources are limited so we have to sasaran our work and resources at where we think we’ll get the biggest returns – particularly on our key measure of medals at the Commonwealth Games.

Our key area of work is to have a clear picture of the pathway through which talented coaches are identified, supported and developed in these sports.

There are a number of targeted approaches we have identified as areas of work moving forward:

1. Providing bespoke Continuous Professional Development programmes for high performance coaches.

By carrying out needs analysis and establishing specific development needs, we’re able to provide CPD opportunities for individual coaches, small groups, or multi-sport environments. One example is a new project to develop reflective practice skills of coaches, where small groups will work together, facilitated by Cardiff Metropolitan University.

2. Developing a pool of quality-assured Welsh-based mentors and coach developers.

We will work with individuals currently in mentoring roles and support them in working towards achieving the new UK Sport Mentor Endorsement standard, as well as identifying new mentors across the sporting and business sectors. Research shows that coaches who engage positively with a mentor demonstrate greater changes in behaviour than those who don’t.

3. Working with UK Sport to provide access for Welsh coaches onto World-Class development programmes, including Elite Coach Apprentice & Elite Coach programmes.

Providing access to World Class development programmes is vital to ensure a coach’s continuous development, and to ensure that they are constantly evolving to meet the changing needs of their athlete/s.

4. Delivering the Home Countries Performance Leaders programme and supporting Welsh Performance Directors to access this programme.

This programme will allow Performance Leaders the opportunity to develop skills in key areas including ‘understanding their self’, leading strategy, and leading and managing relationships in teams. The programme also gives Performance Leaders the opportunity to work with and alongside others in similar roles and facing similar challenges, from across all four home countries.

5. Delivering an ‘Athlete to Coach’ programme aimed at ex-elite level athletes who wish to remain involved in their sport in a coaching capacity.

Elite athletes hold a wealth of knowledge with regards to the technical and tactical skills of their sport. They have experienced the pelatihan regime required to achieve the highest level and they absolutely understand the lifestyle sacrifices necessary for success.

Those athletes with the desire to transition from competing to coaching, who have the opportunity to work within their National Governing Body’s performance pathway, can now be supported for twelve months by this new initiative. It aims to add coaching skills and understanding to the tacit technical knowledge already present within the nominee.

Working in collaboration with NGBs, Athlete to Coach aims to provide transitioning coaches with the foundation skills to optimise their current technical and tactical knowledge. This grounding in the principles of effective coaching is designed to support these individuals at the start of their journey towards being a world class coach.

6. Working with scUK/UK Sport to provide access for Welsh coaches onto development programmes such as Aspire.

Aspire is about developing a coach’s expertise in the talent/performance foundation domain by expanding their insight, broadening their understanding and influencing their coaching practice to further support the needs of their athletes/teams.

It is designed to accelerate the development of the appropriate knowledge, skills and behaviours of coaches working with identified individuals within national age-group squads who have the potential to progress into world-class programmes. Aspire also provides coaches with the opportunity to network with up to 20 coaches from other sports across the home countries, to share learning, expertise, and perkara solving.

While success can never be guaranteed when it comes to elite sport, all this work will help impact on Welsh performance and our key objectives in elite sport:

  • Improved performance standards
  • Increased number of athletes on UK World Class programmes
  • More medals on the World stage
  • Increased ability to deliver and achieve performance results
  • Quality Talent Development coaches supporting the development of talented athletes further down the pathway
Perhaps most vital, National Governing Bodies will be involved in shaping development programmes and opportunities for their high performance and talent development coaches with us at . We need NGBs to be providing in-house development, and ensuring that coaches and Performance Leaders have access to appropriate sport-specific and wider development opportunities.
