Standing Up For Welsh Women’S Sport, By Sarah Powell

A blog by Sarah Powell, CEO

We are far from short of inspiring women in Wales, as we were reminded at last night’s Womenspire Awards.
Chwarae Teg, Wales’ leading gender equality charity, again brought together women from all backgrounds across Wales in celebration. And we, at , were proud to play our part.
As sponsors of the sport award, we were delighted to see such a high calibre of female sporting role models head up the field.
Shortlisted women were:
Dr Kelly Morgan, a Research Fellow at Cardiff University;
Erika Fitzgibbon a retired Volunteer Chair and Leader at Women Running Penarth
Kelly Stokes the Team Captain of roller derby team Riot City Ravens
Athlete Mica Moore (Bobsleigh and Track Athletics).

Mica Moore took the award for 2018 - huge congratulations to her.

The different skills, backgrounds and sports in the nominees list show just how diverse and vibrant women’s sport in Wales is right now.

The profile of women’s sport is becoming more and more prevalent - but research shows us there is still some way to go.
We don’t want gender to be a barrier when it comes to sport participation and through our initiatives like Our Squad, we empower women to try new sports and opportunities to broaden their experiences and, hopefully – enjoy!

Evenings such as yesterday, bring us together to champion women and leave us filled with pride.

When it comes to sport, we look up to these role who make a real and positive difference to the lives of others. We are thankful for the way in which they motivate other Welsh women and girls to get active.
