Volunteer Ayat Inspires A Generation In Newport

Passionate, enthusiastic, positive – just three of the words used to describe volunteer Ayat Hassam, who gives up her time to help Newport BME Sport Project.

The success of many sport projects rely on people like Ayat, who got involved over 12 months ago.

The Newport BME Sport Project are quick to sing her praises: “One of Ayat’s strengths is being very approachable and engaging” explains Lauren Boyd, Project Officer at BME .  “She quickly builds great relationships with all of the young people she works with and her commitment is immeasurable.”

The enthusiastic 21-year-old never misses a session and juggles her love of volunteering with studying for a sports degree at Cardiff Met University.

Thanks to support from those around her, Ayat has gone from strength to strength in developing her responsibilities. She’s even added a string of qualifications to her name, from First Aid and Sports Leaders (Level 2), to FAW Football Leaders and Basketball Referee (Level 1).

There’s no such thing as a quiet week for Ayat, who contributes to many different projects and programmes – from football to basketball. One of these is a weekly session for Ace’s Basketball and Asa Wait from the club says: “she is a key factor to the development of grassroots basketball.”
Her work doesn’t just include leading sessions.

Lauren Boyd explains: “Ayat is highly adaptable and excels in a variety of environment, even managing groups and other volunteers.”

With a passion for sport, Ayat is full of ideas of how to develop more opportunities for all young people, including those of BME backgrounds.

“She is a fantastic BME female role model who I believe will continue to inspire a generation of young people” adds Boyd.
