Fit & Fab For Your Mental Health


A group who set up a fitness support group for their mental health, have turned their lives around.



Carys, 18, was chatting with two friends in South Wales, when they agreed they wanted to do something about their weight and wellbeing.



Fit and Fab was born.



 The Pontypool teenager explains: “It is all about helping each other to eat healthy and exercise, to find things we enjoy and have fun.”



The group is supported by Torfaen Sports Development and Volunteering Matters.  



Carys reflects on the transformation: “Before the group was set up, I didn’t do any exercise or eat healthy at all” she admits. “Since joining I now eat healthier and have even showed my Mum and Dad all the things I have learned, like the Eat Well plate and traffic light system on packaging. It’s really helped us when we are out food shopping.” 




Carys has made healthy swaps with her food and drinks more water. She tells us: “I’m a really fussy eater and didn’t really want to try new foods, but through the group I have tried lots of new things.”



The group have been a big support for each other: “It is nice to be able to help each other to cook. We do things like going to the supermarket and reading packets to make sure we pick the foods that are best for us.”



The Fit and Fab squad met Personal Trainer, Ray, and exercise every week. “We started off with circuit pembinaan and then one week I even walked up a big hill called The Folly” remembers Carys. “Exercising has made me feel healthier and happier and I look forward to our next session.”



The new, healthier lifestyle has given Carys a new-found confidence: “Going to public places, meeting new people, it’s all helped with my confidence and the way I feel.”
