“I Bought A Bike The Day I Drew My Pension” – Cecilia Thomas

Sport had Cecilia hooked. Here she explains how a group of friends helped encourage her to get on her bike ...

63-year-old Cardiff GP Cecilia started running in 2003. Before this, she had been too busy with a full-time job and raising her three children to find time for herself. She decided to join an outdoor fitness group.

“One of the girls in the group suggested that we entered a triathlon and I initially declined because I hadn’t been on a bike since I was 12.”

She was persuaded … and her love of cycling began.

But things were put on hold for Cecilia last Summer when she developed a large cyst on her spinal chord and needed surgery.

She tells us: “After 12 weeks I started to use the Watt bikes in my local gym and signed up for The Tour of Pembrokeshire.”

She knows the benefits of cycling for mental health: “As a GP, I have read a lot about the evidence for exercise to improve mental health.” She adds: “Cycling can be a very social sport but equally, it can be done alone"

"I would have struggled to get back my cycling fitness back if a friend had not invited me to join a group of cyclists touring around the Scottish coast this summer.”

In the same way her friends encouraged her to take up the sport, she wants to inspire others to do the same: “Cycling, I am told, is replacing  golf as the sport for my generation in their retirement" and adds: "I bought a bike the day I drew a pension.”
