The school sports survey gives an opportunity for school pupils to have their own opinions heard. They can express themselves and allow people to understand what they actually want instead of others guessing.
Organisations listen to this and use the data to not only better the sports in each school but in the whole of Wales. With the outcome of the survey being recognised by Estyn as a reliable way to see pupil’s wellbeing, schools take notice and now more than ever will do something with the results from the survey.
From my own experience it enabled my old secondary school to see there was a demand for a girl’s rugby team. This team allowed girls of all abilities to get together have fun and play a sport they loved. Not only increasing their activity levels but also their confidence.
Sport is so critical to the overall health of an individual and with mental health problems becoming more prominent in our younger generation it is vital we listen to their social, physical and mental needs.
A School Sport Survey report is unique to each individual school and allows them to personalise an approach to increase the level of activity in their area. As a young platinum ambassador, I have seen the difference it has made in my county.
More sports councils began to develop after the last survey’s results which allowed pupils to have a voice constantly not just during the survey analysis. Better links have been made with community teams allowing pupils to continue playing sport outside of school, this develops their love for physical activity and means they are more likely to carry on playing sport into their adult life.
The School Sport Survey is a brilliant way to get this generation heard as they know better than anyone else what needs to be done to get them more active. They get an opportunity to contribute to the planning of which sports are offered at their schools and colleges.
The individuals that do this survey are our future we must listen to their ideas to ensure a happier and healthier country.
