British International Para-Swimming Championships 2016, By Huw Griffiths

As National Para-Swimming manager it is my role to identify and support our future para-swimmers, as well as ensure they are provided with an environment, in and out of the pool, that enables them to reach the highest standards.

The British International Para-Swimming Championships is one of the main competitions of the year and where our swimmers are targeting making consideration times for British Para-Swimming’s World Class programme. It is also an opportunity for the swimmers to compete against some of the best swimmers across the World, as well as the best Great Britain has to offer, with swimmers from Germany, Spain, Italy, Malaysia and Canada competing. This year the event is also the qualification trials for the ParalympicGB Team that will head out to Rio.

Swimmers to Watch:

Rio 2016 Qualification

Jack Thomas:

Jack will be swimming in the S14 classification with his main events being the 200 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke. Jack will be returning to the pool where he claimed a bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games after a sensational swim in the S14 200 freestyle. He will also come head to head with his GB teammate Tom Hamer, who claimed silver in that race.

Aaron Moores:

S14 classification swimmer Aaron will be looking to book at place for a second successive appearance at a Paralympic Games, having won a bronze medal at London 2012. Aaron’s main event in Glasgow will be the 100 Breaststroke and following his move to Swansea in the last 12 months, he has seen his performances go from strength to strength. His main rival will be fellow GB swimmer Scott Quinn.

Chloe Davies:

Like Aaron, 2012 Paralympian Chloe will be aiming to be part of her second ParalympicsGB team. Chloe has had a fantastic season, breaking a host of British records. The turn of the year has seen Chloe work closely under the guidance of Adam Baker and Stuart McNarry at the Swim Wales Performance Centre and she is looking extremely strong going into trials. Chloe will be looking to qualify in the 100 Breaststroke, 200 Individual Medley, 100 Backstroke and 200 Freestyle. Her main competition will be current World and Paralympic champions Bethany Firth and Jessica Jane Applegate.

Other Swimmers to Watch

Molly Hopkins:

Neath Swimmer Molly Hopkins is 12 years-old and swims in the S9 classification. Molly is currently part of the British Para-Swimming World Class Academy and is certainly a talent to keep an eye on for the future and a Tokyo2020 potential. Molly will be competing in the 50 Freestyle, 100 Freestyle, 400 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke.

Jonathan Eke:

Jonathan trains at City of Newport and competes in the S10 classification. This season has seen Jonathan post a World Class Podium Potential consideration time in his main event, 400 Freestyle. Having returned from The Hague Gold Grand Prix in February with some medal winning performances, Jonathan is coming into Trials in good form.

Tom Piggott

Tom has seen a massive improvement in his performances over the last 18months. He currently trains with coach Daniel Malcolm at Shrewsbury ASC and is targeting hitting the 600 Para-swimming points mark in Glasgow. Tom is competing in 7 events over the course of the weekend, with his main events being the 400 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke. Tom swims under the S10 classification.

Bethan Eckley

City of Cardiff Swimmer Bethan is an S10 classification swimmer. Having competed at her first international competition earlier in the year, The Hague Grand Prix, she comes into the BIPSC on the back of extremely strong performances in the 100 freestyle and 400 freestyle. Bethan is within touching distance of making a World Class Programme consideration time and having competed against some of the best swimmers from the Netherlands, she will not be overawed by competing against the likes of Harriet Lee and Alice Tai in Glasgow.
