Anyone living in Wales today would testify that the profile of sports has increased over the past twelve months. This is probably due to successes in different types of sports, from the Commonwealth Games last summer to the successes of our national teams on various fields.
Hand in hand with these successes, we in the Welsh Language Commissioner have been working with the sports associations to ensure that the Welsh language is an integral part of sports coaching, competition and culture.
Following on from a conference held with the sports associations last year, the associations came together again on Monday 30 March to discuss progress in terms of developing the use of the Welsh language. We discussed how to move forward to expand the use of Welsh even further. The seminar was held jointly between the Welsh Language Commissioner and Sports Wales.
Representatives from the swimming, cricket, gymnastics, athletics, football, sailing, and hockey associations attended the seminar along with representatives from Disability , the Urdd, educational institutions and the media.
We had the opportunity to hear about research carried out by the Welsh Football Trust and Cricket Wales and their plans to develop the natural use of the Welsh language in coaching at club level.
In moving forward, officers from the Welsh Language Commissioner’s Promotion and Facilitation Team will now go about preparing a guide on bilingual coaching, drawing upon the experiences of an array of sports associations. The guide will be of practical assistance on how to carry out pelatihan sessions and competitions where the Welsh language is a natural part of the sport and where the Welsh and English languages can exist alongside each other.
