Sports Leaders Uk - Our Work In Wales In 2014, By Rob Guy Operations Manager For Wales

Sports Leaders UK work has seen an unprecedented growth in Wales in recent years. Here, Rob Guy gives his view on the achievements over the last year.

In Feb 2015 Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Ken Skates said of sports leadership in Wales:

“Physical activity is vitally important to the health and well-being of Wales and we want to encourage as many young people as possible to get active and hooked on sports for life.

“The work of Sports Leaders is invaluable in helping us meet this aim. Their work not only engages young people with sports and physical activity, but also supports them to developing fantastic skills that they will have for the rest of their lives. From leadership and communication skills to boosting confidence and self-esteem, the awards and qualifications provided by Sports Leaders are helping to create the next generation of planners, organisers and innovators to be employed in Wales.”

The total number of Sports Leaders trained in Wales during 2014 was 5670.

This number includes: Playmakers at Primary Schools; Young Leaders in Year 7 and 8; Sport; Dance and Outdoor Leaders in secondary schools, colleges and community organisations; NGB Leaders in schools and clubs; and adult volunteers pembinaan as Sports Leaders in organisations such as Asda and the National Federation of Women’s Institute Wales.

Sports Leadership in Wales during 2014 saw us, for the first time, achieve a 50/50 split of male/female Sports Leaders being trained throughout the year - showing the increasing appeal that Sports Leadership has for women and girls.

Denbighshire Leisure Services received their Leadership Academy Plaque for sector leading Sports Leadership practise from Ken Skates the Deputy Minister for Sport, Culture and Tourism and became Wales’ first community based Leadership Academy

Within the FE College Sector, several Welsh FE Colleges were highly commended for their Sports Leadership work by Sports Leaders UK President Baroness Tanni Grey Thompson, and Coleg Gwent were recognised at the House of Lords as the 2014 UK FE College Leadership Academy of the Year.
Other FE College Leadership Academies in Wales include, Merthyr Tydfil College, Grwp NTPC, Gower College Swansea, Bridgend College, Grwp Llandrillo Menai and Cardiff and Vale College.

The University of South Wales became the first university in Wales to be recognised as a Sports Leaders UK Leadership Academy and was presented with their plaque in June 2014.

Sports Leaders UK started work in 2014 with the WJEC to develop a Sports Leadership Skills Challenge for the revised Welsh Baccalaureate to increase community participation and volunteering through sport whilst at the same time developing important life skills.

In October 2014, in partnership with , we hosted our first Sports Leadership conference for Mid and West Wales, which saw lots of existing  partners showcasing their Sports Leadership work and lots of new potential organisations finding out about the value of developing the leadership skills of young people through Sport.

The 2nd South East Leadership conference delivered at the Caerleon Campus of University of South Wales. This event was planned and delivered by Young Ambassadors and aimed at Silver Young Ambassadors.

Two Sports Leaders / Young Ambassadors delivered Leadership workshop at the Wales Council for Voluntary Action Conference to show case the work being done in volunteering in sport to the rest of the voluntary sector. They were the only young people involved in the conference.

The National Federation of Women’s Institutes Wales completed a Sports Leadership programme starting with 25 Sports Leaders being trained at the end of 2013 and then engaging with more than 2000 participants during 2014.

The National Governing Body Sports Leadership Awards continued to develop well during 2014 with Badminton, Hockey, Gymnastics, Swimming and Netball at the forefront and these sports were also involved with our West Wales conference and at the Welsh Parliament.

Looking forward to 2015 we are working closely with the Spirit of 2012 Legacy Trust to engage more people as Sports Leaders and our new Chief Executive Richard Norman has signed a three year partnership agreement with helping to continue the momentum of the Sports Leaders UK Charity in Wales.
