Time to Change Wales in partnership with the Football Association of Wales Trust has been awarded £104,000 Calls4Action funding to run a programme called ‘Breaking the Barriers Football Programme’.
We asked Time to Change Wales Programme Manager Ant Metcalfe what the project is all about….
Why we applied for the funding?
In any year one in four individuals will experience a mental health dilema or illness. And one in six of the workforce will also face these challenges.
People with mental health problems should have the same access to services and activities as anyone else (healthcare, employment, arts and sport) but many have their lives blighted by the stigma and discrimination that surrounds mental health. This stigma and discrimination can be found from within their families, friendship groups, local community and at work.
Our research also shows that people with mental health conditions are also much less likely to engage in sport and to have lower life expectations than other groups. Building on from our work in Time to Change Wales from 2012 we want to improve the physical and mental wellbeing of people with lived experience by supporting them to engage with mainstream sporting activities.
We approached the Football Association of Wales Trust to develop a partnership programme that will link in our campaign messaging and stigma busting work with the physical activity programmes and network of the established clubs.
What can we bring to the table?
TTCW is an award winning anti stigma campaign in Wales funded by the Big Lottery and Comic Relief and was launched in 2012. Since then we have developed a network of champions across Wales (all of whom have their own lived experience), run community projects and population wide social marketing campaigns to change public attitudes around mental health.
We educate, inform, break down barriers and normalise the conversation around mental health.
To this funded project we will bring our established networks, our skills in marketing and communication and those with lived experience who will provide their stories and experience. This, combined with the activity skills, coaches and locations that the clubs will provide will generate an environment that will ensure that those with mental health lived experience can engage and thrive at a location that is free from mental health stigma and discrimination.
What do we think our impact will be on health/well being etc
Our project will have multiple impacts:
· Break down mental health stigma and discrimination in the communities in which these clubs are based (Merthyr Tydfil, Newtown, Newport and Wrexham)
· Educate the club staff and local fan base on the issues around mental health stigma and discrimination – leading to greater community cohesion.
· Achieve a measurable improvement in health and wellbeing of at least 450 people involved with the project – with 25% of these achieving sustained physical activity.
· Outcomes around self-esteem, confidence and fitness and weight loss for the group involved.
